Nancy Hodson moved to Iowa from her native California with her husband, Robert, after earning her license Practical Nurse (LPN) in 1958 from Highland Hospital in Oakland, CA. While raising three children, she worked as an LPN at various area locations. She completed her Associate Degree Nursing from SCC Keokuk Campus in 1973. After earning her RN, she became supervisor of the Behavior Modification Unit at Mount Pleasant Mental Health Institute. She later became supervisor of the mental health units that served patients from Lee, Henry, Louisa and Des Moines Counties.
In the late 1970’s she worked in obstetrics at Fort Madison Community Hospital. Nancy joined the faculty of the SCC Nursing program Keokuk Campus in 1980. She earned a B.A. from Western Illinois University in 1989.
Nancy retired as SCC Keokuk Campus Nursing Coordinator and instructor in 2003, and has served as an SCC adjunct instructor for various health-related courses since her retirement. Nancy worked with the Iowa Organization for the Advancement of Associate Degree Nursing. Since 1999, Nancy has helped organize the Eva Brown Walk-Run for SCC Foundation Nursing scholarships. She is on the Advisory Committee for Keokuk Area Hospital Home Health, serves on the Resident Advocate Committee at the Donnellson Care Center, and is a volunteer for Hospice of Central Iowa and the Area Agency on Aging.
Nancy is a Charter Member of the SCC Alumni Association and served on the Board from 1996-2006. Her fellow nurses who nominated her for this award stated, “With a listening ear and strong communication skills, Nancy has served as a role model for hundreds of nurses.”
