Patt began her career as an elementary teacher of physical education in Wheaton, IL and her professional career in Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) at the University of Texas at Permian Basin.
In 1978, she joined the faculty at the University of Massachusetts (Amherst) where she, along with her colleagues, developed and directed a doctoral PETE program that serves as a benchmark throughout the world.
An editor, author of over forty publications, and national award winner, Patt received this tribute in an award nomination: “Patt’s contributions to her field range from developing her own distinct lines of research, to her excellent mentoring of PETE students, to serving as manuscript reviewer and co-editor of professional journals. She is thought to be an exquisite example of a true scholar/teacher. Patt’s work reflects both depth and breadth of knowledge and the highest standards of rigor.”
Dr. Dodds is a strong proponent of community colleges, maintaining that her time at BCC made her a lifelong learner and taught her how to maximize the advantages of her later degrees.
