Through education, coaching, and volunteer service, Dick has earned the respect and trust of his associates, made substantial contributions to the good of his fellow human beings, especially youth, and served as a motivational force for others in a positive manner, thus meeting all the criteria for this award.
A 1952 graduate of Burlington High School, Dick earned an AA from Burlington Junior College in 1954, a BA from Parsons College in 1956, and an MS in Business Education from Mankato State University in 1960. An outstanding baseball player himself, Dick started his coaching and teaching career in 1956, serving at Cantril, Deep River, Wayland and Burlington High Schools. Dick was the Athletic Director at BHS from 1979 to 1992. Highlights of the many honors he has received include being named National High School Baseball Coach of the year in 1975, being inducted into the Iowa Baseball Hall of Fame and the Iowa Softball Umpires Hall of Fame, and receiving the Lyle Quinn Award from IHSAA. At his Croton, Iowa home, he sponsors annual 3-on-3 basketball and cross-country tournaments. Dick is a Charter Lifetime member of the SCCAA and serves as Treasurer.
